In a span of 3 months, I reviewed over 240 resumes as a hiring manager for engineering roles at my company. As a result, I decided to host resume reviews on my Twitch stream to share what I learned from years of wisdom gathered from applying for tech roles and screening resumes. This blog post shares a general resume checklist based on the resumes I’ve reviewed.

  1. Your summary quickly/clearly articulates who you are, what you’ve done, & what you’re interested in.
  2. Experiences and projects discuss the skills you used to accomplish X task with Y tool(s).
  3. Omit generic/subjective statements to instead showcase your impact.
  4. Use past tense “action” verbs to describe your accomplishments/contributions.
  5. Work experience is sorted in reverse chronological order.
  6. The skills section is sorted by most relevant.
  7. The resume has sections and consistent formatting.
  8. Hyperlink to any public-facing projects, professional social media, etc.

Resumes are documents that summarize what makes you uniquely ready to obtain the opportunity that an employer owns. Resumes should be accurate, concise, and easy to read. And most importantly, they should make you excited to tell your story in an interview.
